Service Summary
Irene Dorothea Alex enlisted in June 1940 in Liverpool, England, at the age of 16. She served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service as part of the military police, completing her training at Aldershot before being posted to various locations in England.
Wartime Experience
Irene carried out military police duties involving both military personnel and civilians. She served in Liverpool and later Manchester, where she was responsible for maintaining discipline and order.
During her service, she encountered dangerous situations, including an incident where she narrowly avoided injury during an arrest.
It was during her posting in Manchester that she met Canadian soldier Hilding Alex, whom she later married.
Post-Service Life
Following her discharge in July 1945, Irene returned briefly to her family before immigrating to Canada in 1946 to join her husband.
Settling in Minnedosa, she adapted to life in Canada and became actively involved in church, education, and community service. She volunteered extensively, including assisting cancer patients and supporting palliative care programs.
She and Hilding raised three daughters and built a life rooted in service and community.
