Service Summary

Henry Carson “Stevie” Stevenson was born November 3, 1918, in Belmont, Manitoba, the son of Dr. William and Katherine Stevenson. He studied Medicine at the University of Manitoba, financing his education through seasonal work in cheese plants in the Interlake region.

He graduated as a physician in 1945 at age 27.

After several months in the Canadian Army Medical Corps, he joined the medical staff in Minnedosa on April 1, 1947, serving as municipal doctor.

Military Service

In 1950, Captain Stevenson served with distinction as an Army Medical Officer on the front lines during the Korean War.

During leave, he returned to Canada to marry Catherine Joyce Hardy, a Registered Nurse serving at Shaughnessy Military Hospital in Vancouver.

He then returned to Korea, where he became known for courage, compassion, and tireless service.

During one daring rescue, he advanced deep into enemy-held territory under heavy fire to retrieve a wounded soldier.

For gallantry, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and was personally invested by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace.

He also provided medical care to countless Korean civilians in need.

Post-Service Life

After discharge, Dr. Stevenson pursued postgraduate studies in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin, Ireland.

He returned to Minnedosa in 1953 and served the community for many years as a beloved family physician.

He remained active in:

• Shrine organizations

• Royal Canadian Legion (Past President)

• Korean Veterans Association

He and Joyce raised seven children.

Dr. Stevenson passed away on February 7, 1987, while on safari in Africa. He was laid to rest in Minnedosa Cemetery.
