Service Summary

Cecil McLachlan Rose was born June 25, 1905, and was raised in Basswood, Manitoba. He married Rachael Margaret Bowley of Binscarth, Manitoba, on October 17, 1942.

He enlisted in the Canadian Active Army at Winnipeg on March 12, 1943, at the age of 38.

Wartime Experience

Cecil trained mainly at Camp Shilo and later served in:

  • Canada

  • United Kingdom

  • Central Mediterranean theatre

  • Central Europe

He was part of a Bren gun crew.

During the Italian Campaign, he became ill with jaundice and spent time in hospital. After recovery, he was assigned kitchen duties.

He later advanced with Allied forces through Italy, Belgium, Holland, and Germany.

He was discharged on February 12, 1946.

Post-Service Life

Cecil and Rachael farmed in the Basswood area and raised three children.

He passed away in 1980 and is buried in Basswood Cemetery.
