Service Summary

Gideon Morris Nelson enlisted in the spring of 1941 at Fort Osborne Barracks in Winnipeg at the age of 28 while working at the Canada Packers plant.

He joined the Canadian Provost Corps, the military police branch of the Canadian Army.

Wartime Experience

Gideon’s early service involved troop and civilian rail patrol duties across Canada, checking military passes, locating deserters, and maintaining order on trains.

He later served at:

  • Valcartier, Quebec

  • Debert, Nova Scotia

  • Sussex, New Brunswick

  • Halifax

  • Camp Borden

In May 1945, after Victory in Europe, he deployed overseas aboard the Ile de France and served with No. 11 Canadian Provost Corps in England.

During July 1945, he was involved in controlling the Aldershot disturbances, when frustrated Canadian troops rioted while awaiting repatriation.

He returned to Canada aboard the Queen Mary in spring 1946 and was discharged in April 1946.

Post-Service Life

Gideon returned to farming south of Minnedosa.

He married Dorothy Carlson in October 1946, and together they farmed until retirement in 1973, when their son Leonard took over the farm.

He enjoyed playing cribbage and helping on the family farm in retirement.
