Service Summary

James Alexander Murray enlisted at Fort Osborne Barracks in Winnipeg on August 14, 1940, at the age of 19. Before enlistment, he worked as a store clerk in Shoal Lake, Manitoba.

He trained in Ontario, Camp Borden, and Nova Scotia as the regiment converted to armoured warfare.

Wartime Experience

Jim deployed overseas in November 1941 and served in England before moving with the regiment to North Africa in late 1943.

He later served throughout the Italian Campaign, including:

  • Ortona sector

  • Melfa River

  • Gothic Line

  • Monte Cassino operations

  • Liberation of Rome

Later, his regiment transferred to Southern France and advanced through France and Belgium before final operations in 1945.

Jim’s responsibilities included supply, rations, clothing, and squadron support while often operating close to the front lines.

He returned to Canada in 1945 and was discharged on October 19, 1945.

Post-Service Life

Jim married Gladys Fraser of Clanwilliam in 1951.

He worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway in Minnedosa for 34 years, retiring in 1985 as a Conductor.

He was a Life Member of the Legion and helped raise a family of three children.
