Service Summary
Lawrence Leslie “Shorty” McLeod joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in Winnipeg on November 23, 1943, at the age of 17. He completed basic aircrew training in Toronto.
He was discharged in December 1944 and shortly afterward joined the Infantry Corps of the Canadian Army in April 1945.
Wartime Experience
Shorty trained with Vickers machine guns at Camp Borden, Ontario.
He volunteered for service in the war against Japan and was scheduled for training in Kentucky, but the war ended before deployment.
He was discharged in September 1945.
Post-Service Life
Shorty returned to his career with the Canadian Pacific Railway, working forty years as a trainman before retiring in 1983.
He married Gloria Arthurs in 1950, and together they raised three daughters.
He was highly active in the Legion, Elks Lodge, curling, golf, and community television.
Shorty was a Life Member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch #138.
