Service Summary

George Charles McLean joined the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve in October 1943 at HMCS Chippewa in Winnipeg at the age of 18. He was called to active service in February 1944.

After training at HMCS Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, he qualified in submarine detection technology using ASDIC sonar systems.

Wartime Experience

George served aboard Corvette HMCS Amherst (K148), escorting North Atlantic convoys to Ireland from bases including Londonderry.

His duties included sonar detection of enemy submarines, convoy escort, and deployment of depth charges during submarine engagements.

He participated in one of the largest wartime convoys to cross the Atlantic, consisting of 157 ships.

Following the war, George volunteered for further service and assisted in decommissioning the naval base in Bermuda.

He was discharged in Winnipeg in November 1945.

Post-Service Life

George returned to work with Imperial Oil in Brandon.

He married Jean Dow of Bethany in 1946, and together they farmed in the Rapid City area for thirty years before retiring to Minnedosa.

He later worked for Manitoba Crop Insurance and was active in public service, serving nineteen years as Councillor in the RM of Saskatchewan.

George also served as Secretary and President of the Rapid City Legion, Secretary of the Elks, and operated a hardware store in Rapid City.
