Canadian Expeditionary Force – First World War
Killed in Action – October 28, 1917

Service Summary

James Madill was born on February 8, 1887, in Minnedosa, Manitoba, the ninth of twelve children of Robert and Rebecca Madill. He grew up on the family farm near Bethany and later became a farmer himself.

With the First World War continuing and Canadian casualties mounting, James chose to volunteer for overseas service.

He enlisted at Fort Frances, Ontario, on April 8, 1916, at the age of 29, joining the 44th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.

Wartime Experience

James served with the Canadian Corps during the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium, one of the most difficult and dangerous campaigns of the war.

On October 28, 1917, only two days after Canadian forces entered the battle, James was killed in action at the age of 30.

Nine days later, Canadian troops captured the ridge.

Commemoration

James is remembered with honour on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium, dedicated to those with no known grave.

His name is also inscribed on the Minnedosa Cenotaph, and a memorial headstone stands beside his parents in Boyd Cemetery at Bethany.
