Service Summary
Richard Herbert Lewis was born and raised on the family farm in the Roseneath community southwest of Minnedosa, Manitoba. He attended Roseneath School and was active in hockey, baseball, the Young People’s Club, and St. Saviour’s Church. Before enlistment, he worked on the family farm.
He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on December 4, 1941, and trained in Brandon, Hagersville, Toronto, and Macdonald. He graduated as a Sergeant Air Gunner and received his Air Gunner Wings.
Wartime Experience
Richard was posted overseas on August 9, 1942.
He later served with No. 427 Squadron (“Lion Squadron”) as a crew member aboard Wellington bomber aircraft BK268.
On February 27, 1943, the aircraft crashed at Woolfox Lodge, England, and Richard was killed in action at the age of 27.
Commemoration
Richard is buried in the churchyard of St. John the Baptist Church, North Luffenham, Rutland, England.
He is remembered among the many Minnedosa area airmen who gave their lives during the Second World War.
