Service Summary
Hayward Charles Hopkins was raised on the family farm near Clanwilliam, Manitoba. He was called for service in May 1941 and later joined the Active Army in May 1942.
He trained in Manitoba and later qualified in mechanical and fitter trades.
Wartime Experience
Hayward deployed overseas aboard the Louis Pasteur and later served in Italy with a Light Aid Detachment attached to the 1st Canadian Survey Regiment.
His role was to repair and maintain essential military vehicles and equipment under combat conditions while supporting artillery and reconnaissance units.
He served during major operations including Monte Cassino, the Hitler Line, Gothic Line, and numerous campaigns across Italy.
Hayward also endured illness from hepatitis and later suffered an eye injury near the war’s end. He continued service in equipment recovery and repair operations before returning home in 1946.
Post-Service Life
After discharge, Hayward returned to farming in the Clanwilliam district. He remained active in church work and the Legion.
He married Vera Hopkins in 1978. Both later resided in Minnedosa.
