Service Summary
Albert Edward “Bert” Delmage enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in January 1943. He trained in Winnipeg and at Manning Depot in Lachine, Quebec, before specializing as an airframe mechanic.
Wartime Experience
Bert served with Ferry Command in Dorval, working on aircraft such as B-25 Mitchells, B-24 Liberators, and B-17 Flying Fortresses destined for overseas operations.
He later trained crews at Boundary Bay, preparing aircraft for operations in the Pacific theatre. During this time, he witnessed a Japanese balloon bomb incident near the base, highlighting the unusual threats faced even in Canada.
Post-Service Life
After discharge in 1945, Bert returned to farming before training as an electrician. He worked in public service for 36 years and was recognized for his contributions.
He remained active in retirement, including involvement with the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum.
