Trooper, 12th Manitoba Dragoons / 18th Armoured Car Regiment
Royal Canadian Army

Service Summary

Wilfred Russell Davies enlisted with the 12th Manitoba Dragoons in Minnedosa on May 31, 1941, at the age of 17, alongside his brother Lloyd. He completed training in Winnipeg, Camp Shilo, and Camp Borden, specializing in vehicles, Bren gun carriers, and mechanical operations.

Wartime Experience

Wilfred served in coastal defence on Vancouver Island before deploying overseas to England in 1943, where he trained on armoured and scout cars.

Shortly after D-Day, he landed in Normandy, disembarking into several feet of water with waterproofed vehicles. His unit, operating as reconnaissance, was responsible for locating enemy positions and reporting back for artillery or air support.

He experienced intense combat conditions, including friendly fire incidents and the loss of fellow soldiers. His regiment advanced through France, Belgium, Holland, and into Germany, reaching the Black Forest by war’s end.

Post-Service Life

After returning to Canada in December 1945, Wilfred attended a New Year’s Eve dance in Minnedosa the same night he arrived home.

He operated a trucking business before returning to farming. He later worked for the RM of Minto as a grader operator until retiring in 1988. Wilfred was active in the Legion and enjoyed curling, travelling, and woodworking.
