Service Summary

James Raymond “Ray” Cornwall was born June 5, 1920, in Minnedosa, Manitoba. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and trained as a pilot and navigator.

Wartime Experience

Ray served with 407 Squadron (“Demon Squadron”), conducting anti-submarine patrols over the Bay of Biscay.

On April 29, 1943, his aircraft crashed into the sea during final approach following engine trouble. All members of the crew were lost.

Commemoration

Ray is commemorated at the Runnymede Memorial in England and on the Minnedosa Cenotaph. An island in northern Manitoba was named in his honour.
