Robert served overseas in France during the First World War. In 1916, he was severely wounded in action and lost his left arm. He was hospitalized in Glasgow and later returned to Canada for extended treatment.

Post-Service Life

Following his recovery, Robert returned to farming. In 1919, he married Helen “Nellie” Richmond, who had come to Canada as a war bride.

Despite his injury, he successfully operated a mixed farm and remained active in sports and community life. They had one son, James, who later served in the Royal Canadian Air Force and was tragically killed in 1941.
