Service Summary

Cecil Harry Bayes enlisted on November 18, 1942, following a demanding harvest season. After completing training in Manitoba, he deployed overseas at the end of 1943.

Wartime Experience

Cecil served in Italy beginning in 1944, participating in operations along the Hitler Line. He later advanced with Allied forces through France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and into Germany.

Despite the intensity of combat, he avoided serious injury, though he later noted the lasting effects of prolonged artillery fire on his hearing.

Post-Service Life

After the war, Cecil returned to Canada and resumed farming in the Rapid City area. In 1952, he married Doreen Edward, and together they raised eleven children.

He remained active in farming and community life, enjoying time with family and local activities.
