Service Summary

Hilding Waldemar Alex enlisted on September 14, 1942, in Winnipeg. He transferred to the Canadian Provost Corps, serving as part of the military police, and completed both basic and specialized training before further instruction at Camp Borden.

In July 1943, he deployed overseas aboard the Queen Elizabeth, arriving in England for continued service.

Wartime Experience

While serving in England, Hilding carried out military police duties, including managing personnel, overseeing convoys, and handling disciplinary matters.

During training, he suffered a broken collarbone in a motorcycle accident, requiring several months of recovery. Despite this setback, he returned to duty and served in multiple locations, including London and Manchester.

In March 1945, he was involved in a serious traffic accident, sustaining multiple severe injuries. He spent several months recovering in hospital before being discharged due to his inability to meet physical requirements for continued service.

Post-Service Life

While recovering in England, Hilding married Irene Coe in June 1945. After returning to Canada, he continued his recovery at Deer Lodge Hospital before returning home to Minnedosa.

Despite ongoing physical challenges, he established a successful farming operation and remained deeply involved in community life. He served in numerous leadership roles, including Reeve, board member, and church leader.

He and Irene raised three daughters and contributed greatly to their community.
